The
Mehndi Party (also known as Henna Party or Mendhi Night)is
now seen as the most fun aspect of a traditional Asian wedding.

A
successful henna night is one filled with laughter, food,
music and light dancing.
In the past this was only for the ladies in the family,
but today everyone close to the family is invited. The Mehndi
party is often held one or two nights before the wedding.
It is a fun and relaxing evening for the bride and these
days the Groom also hosts his own Mendhi party for the benfit
of the ladies in his family and basically another excuse
to have a fun filled evening. The evening is spent by a
professional applying mehndi (henna) designs to the bride's
hands, feet and anywhere else! Traditionally the name of
the bridegroom is worked into the Mehndi pattern of the
bride friends and family will also have some Mehndi applied.
While applications are being done, their may be music, dance
and other entertainment for the guests, be it dance performances,
Belly Dancers and much more.
Top tips to
make your Mendhi Night a success
The perfect mendhi night should bring together all the right
ingredients, allowing you to relax, letting go of pre-wedding
nerves and enjoy this happy occasion with your closest family
& friends...
Who to invite
Keep the occasion relaxed and intimate by only inviting
those who are close to you. Don’t feel pressured into
inviting every female relative or friend. There will be
other occasions for them to attend.
Theme and
décor
Think about the style and the theme you want for this evening.
Fresh flowers and plenty of scented tea-lights will set
a lovely mood for the occasion
Music & Entertainment
The choice of music is essential. You could buy wedding
compilation CD's or another idea would be to involve friends
and family by asking around to see who can play the harmonium
or dholki. If you decide to hire a DJ for entertainment
make sure they do not turn your Mendhi party into a night
club with loud music. The Mendhi party music should be more
in the background to give the rightly deserved atmosphere
and allow everyoe to talk and mingle about the wedding etc.
A small element of the evening could involve some Dancing
etc but do bear in mind that your guests hands will be full
of Mendhi designs so any freestyle dance floor moves may
be limited ! We at Indian Wedding Day.com do a select few
themed mendhi events per and offer themes based on:- Gujarati
Folk Songs, Rajasthani Music, Arabic & Persian melodies,
60's & 70's Hindi Classics.
Henna artist
If you have a fairly long guest list, it might be useful
to have more than one henna artist. While the main artist
works on intricate designs on your hands and feet, an assistant
artist could make simpler motifs for your guests. This ensures
that the main artist can take his/her time on your henna,
while everyone gets to be involved too.
